When many of us hear the word “healthy,” it conjures up images of spending three hours a day in the gym and eating food with little or no flavour. Put “healthy” together with “workplace,” and we see our cookie and cake supply disappearing before our very eyes.

The team in Management Career Services (MCS) knows there’s more to a healthy workplace than just eating right and exercising. Their efforts to incorporate several aspects of health into their daily routines have won them the first Dalhousie Healthy Workplace Award.

“We’re excited to be chosen,” says MCS Director Anna Cranston. “It’s always nice to be recognized for your efforts.”

Residents of Dartmouth have more options for fitness with the installation of another set of outdoor gym equipment. The 10 or so all-weather machines are set up on the portion of the Trans Canada Trail that runs around Lake Banook.Kathy MacKinnon, the municipality’s recreation co-ordinator for Dartmouth and Eastern Passage, said the installation of the new equipment came with the support of Dartmouth Centre Coun. Gloria McCluskey.

“She’s a huge believer in physical activity, and her really big thing is access to physical activity and outdoor recreation services that don’t cost a lot. Whether you’re a child or an adult, that’s her drumbeat.”

The outdoor gym is on the trail between the Banook Canoe Club and Sullivans Pond, and was installed in September. “It’s a really beautiful set of equipment, and it really links into (the concept) of people being able to access gym equipment even if they can’t afford it or don’t have time,” MacKinnon said. She said the gym also fits in with the Stepping Up Physical Activity Strategy, an initiative of seven organizations that promotes exercise. One part of the strategy is “unstructured, unregistered activity,” MacKinnon said. Read more

This initiative has been awarded the IWK’s 2011 Quality Worklife Award!

In order to achieve the IWK Vision of “Healthy families; The best care.” we must first ensure that those providing care are healthy. The “It’s All About M.E.” Challenge initiative has made a positive difference in people’s lives by supporting employees in achieving and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It has made a difference in the health and well-being of our employees who provide care to women, children, youth and families. This program was launched in the summer of 2010 and has run five times providing 268 IWK employees an opportunity to increase their physical activity and make healthier eating choices. At the end of each 16 week challenge the participants are asked to complete an evaluation of the program, feedback is incorporated into the program for the next session. To date challengers have lost over 978 pounds and walked over 63 million steps. Read more…
