Measuring Progress

How physically active are we in the Halifax Regional Municipality?             This spring the marketing research firm Ipsos Reid surveyed HRM residents on physical activity, canvassing 300 HRM residents, (150 males, 150 females) aged 18 years and older. Specific survey topics included:

  • Regularity, type and duration of citizen’s physical activity
  • Motivation for participating/not participating in physical activity
  • Satisfaction with and usage of recreation facilties, programs, services
  • Factors influencing participation in physical activity
  • Perceptions on the walking environment in HRM
  • Parent opinions on children’s physical activity patterns and usage of facilities

This survey was sponsored in cooperation with Stepping Up and the Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness. It establishes baseline data and can help inform strategy development. Due to a small sample size, results for children’s physical activity patterns and usage of facilities are inconclusive.
